This Saturday is Tox-Away Day!

Don't forget that this Saturday, August 29th, is your next chance to safely dispose of your household hazardous wastes (HHW) like pesticides, herbicides, fluorescent light bulbs, batteries, adhesives, automotive fluids, cleaners, unwanted medicines, oil-based paints...

Recycling: Always Changing

One of the things that keeps those of us that work in the waste management industry so interested in what we do is the constant change we experience. New containers are accepted in recycling programs all the time. The ways recyclables are collected and sorted vary and become more efficient. Add in the fluctuating values of the plastic, paper and metals recyclers are marketing day after day, and evolution is the only constant.

Litter Elimination

This summer has been great! We hope you got out with your family and friends and enjoyed some of the best that the outdoors has to offer here in Hendricks County. It is so important to get to know nature in our backyards, neighborhoods, county, state and country so we develop the sense of ownership that is so important when we are talking about things like not littering and recycling. We are far more likely to pay attention to where we put our trash when we know the river that it could end up in or the animal that might accidentally ingest it.

Connecting with You via Nextdoor!

The Hendricks County Solid Waste Management District recently partnered with Nextdoor, the free and private social network for neighborhoods, to increase communications with residents across Hendricks County. Local residents can now receive messages directly from the Solid Waste Management District and get updates on upcoming Tox-Away Days, recycling services and special events.

Free Refills at the 4H Fair!

It is estimated that Americans alone use 50 billion (that’s 50,000,000,000!) water bottles every year. It’s great that we are drinking all that water our doctors are telling us is so good for our bodies. But, the recycling rate for water bottles is a measly 23%. Fair1That means that 38 billion water bottles are being thrown away every year in this country. That level of waste is staggering and unnecessary when water bottles are made from a very valuable resource (#1 PET plastic) and are recyclable in virtually every curbside and drop-off recycling program across the country.

What Goes in Your Bin??

Recycling programs: the same thing, only different… When it comes to recycling programs, knowing which materials are accepted and which aren’t is critical to the program’s success. But, understanding those rules can sometimes be difficult. We have developed a quick and easy guide to help Hendricks County residents better-understand what materials are accepted in the residential recycling programs available here.

Lawn Fertilizer: Too Much of a Good Thing?

For some of us, manicuring our lawn is like a summer sport. We want our lawns to look like golf courses; as thick and lush as carpet. In some cases, the road to a beautiful lawn is paved with fertilizers and pesticides. And while they can make you the envy of your neighbors, if used or disposed of improperly, they can become hazards to you or to the environment.

Teaching Students to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and So Much More!

Youth education is a major focus of our work here at the District.  Amy Sieferman, our Outreach Coordinator, spends the majority of her time teaching Hendricks County students about waste diversion through hands-on, in-school programs that engage the students and...

Freewheelin’ Community Bikes

Perhaps the notions of delayed gratification, perserverance and accountablity aren't the first ideas that come to mind when you think of a kid and his bike.  But, those are exactly the life skills that the good folks at Freewheelin' Community Bikes in Indianapolis (at...
