The District recently coordinated its fifth annual “Recycle: Heart and Sole” county-wide shoe reuse collection event. “Recycle: Heart and Sole” collects clean-gently used shoes from participating schools and donates them to charities in need.
This year Boone and Hendricks County Solid Waste Management Districts partnered with Changing Footprints, a local charitable organization who distributes shoes to those in need right here in Central Indiana. All kinds of shoes in all sizes and shapes are donated to places like homeless shelters, battered women’s shelters, schools, hospitals and even Riley Hospital’s annual prom. Shoes are then also shared abroad to those in need.
Twelve Hendricks County Schools participated in the collection which ran from February 9th through 13th. Within that time period, our schools donated 2,601 pairs of shoes. Along with the shoes collected from the Boone County Solid Waste District, Changing Footprints now has enough shoes for the entire year! We are so proud of the generosity of our residents!
Schools that collected the most shoes in each participating school district will be rewarded with science and environmental books for the school’s library just in time for Earth Day 2015 coming up on Wednesday, April 22nd.
Plans are already underway for next year’s collection. If you or your organization would like to help, let us know, we love volunteers!
