Our goal is to teach youth about waste reduction and environmental responsibility. Many of our programs meet or correlate with Indiana’s Academic Standards. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rethink
Learn the basics of recycling! What can we recycle? How can we recycle it? Where can we recycle it? And why should we recycle it?

Worms Are Still Eating My Garbage
Scheduled only Sept-Nov. Learn about the red worm and how it turns garbage into compost. If desired, the class is left with a working vermicompost system and a “how to” book.

Litter: Pick it Up, Don’t Pass it Up!
What is litter? Where does it come from? What can you do about it?
Find out with this interactive litter prevention program. Weather permitting, this will include a litter clean-up around the school grounds. We will add in a new book about the affects of plastic pollution on wildlife along with a hands-on activity.

How Do They Do That?
What happens to the “stuff” we put in our recycling bin? It can find new life as lots of fun and useful things. This program explains the difference between making things from natural resources and recycling. Lots of samples of recycled content items are included in the program!

“Eliza and The Dragonfly” with a Trash to Treasure Craft
Through a reading of Eliza and the Dragonfly, students will learn about the life cycle of a dragonfly, water quality and the connections between human actions and habitats. We will conclude the lesson by making a dragonfly from a re-used spoon and plastic.

Treasure Walk
Go on a treasure walk with us! We will be talking about one of our favorites, “Tiny, Perfect Things” by M.H. Clark. When you look for the tiny things, you care about them. And when you care about them, you do things to protect them.

Create-A-Story
Students will “discover” what’s in a random bag of artifacts (reused objects) salvaged from a home and create a story using the objects for inspiration for time, setting, conflict and character.

Garbage Pizza
Have you ever wondered how much space cardboard, plastic or paper take up in the landfill? This is a fun way to learn math and science at the same time!

Compost Stew
Using a rhyming story book, this programs introduces students to the merits of waste reduction through composting. Participants witness compost in action, and work together to create a healthy compost system through an interactive model.

STEM Challenge: Architecture
Plan, Build, and Test a house from reused/repurposed materials with inspiration from “Iggy Peck Architect”. Students will work in teams and be given a certain amount of time and materials to construct a home.

Junkbot
Read along with us as we enjoy “The Most Magnificent Thing” by Ashley Spires and make our own Junkbot from reused items you might find around the house. Don’t worry if it doesn’t work the first time.

Book Bins
Book bins can be checked out by teachers for two weeks or we can bring the program to your classroom. The bin includes a book with a STEM or environmental message and materials to do a related craft or STEM activity.
